October 2006 News Archive (Older news link at bottom of page) |
September 26 Chicago Show |
|
Click on the little image to the left to see a new set of pictures from Hem's 9/26 concert at Martyrs' in Chicago. The last 4 are the new ones. (Thanks, Jeff!) Permanent links to the photos are at the tour pictures and 2006 tour archives. |
Paste Launch Party Show |
A show Hem played a few days ago on October 26 in New York is now listed at the 2006 tour archive. It was a special show by Paste Magazine to launch their issue #26, the one with Beck on the cover. Beck made a surprise stop at the show, playing a set after Hem. That is an odd but great lineup. Between being a Paste subscriber, running this website, and reading issue #26 on the day of the show (no kidding!), I totally should've been there. Where's the love of personalized, detailed advance notice, Paste? (Don't worry, I'm still going to renew my subscription.) |
Tour Archive Redesign |
The entire tour archive has a new design. Hooray! The content is the same, but every year should be easier to navigate. Also, you can better tell which shows have bonus content beyond city and venue - things like setlists, photos, videos, and audio. To check out the new look, click tours on the lefthand menu or select a particular year: 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000. If you encounter any problems with the new design or have any questions or comments about the tour archive (or anything else - I'm chock full of time now that Hem finished their Fall tour), I'd be happy to hear from you. |
Hem Ringtones |
Did you know that you can hear Hem every time your phone rings? The songs Half Acre and An Easy One are each available as a ringtone. The ringtones have been available since January, but I thought it was time for a reminder since I think a ton of people visit here for information about "Half Acre." I know that if I had a phone it would play on, I'd be forcing people to call me just so I could repeatedly hear the opening bars of that song. |
September 8 Vancouver Show |
|
The tour pictures and 2006 tour archives now have a flyer from Hem's first Fall tour show in Vancouver. Click on the mini preview to the left to see a larger image. |
October 20 Falls Church Show |
The 2006 tour archive now includes a mostly-complete setlist from the last show of Hem's Fall tour, their stop in Falls Church, VA. (Thanks, Bob B.!) |
Falls Church Article |
The Falls Church News-Press had an article about Hem on October 19, the day before their show in Falls Church, VA. Along with a lot of complements for the band, the article includes words from Sally Ellyson about the magic of joining and being in Hem. You can find a permanent link to this article at the interview archive. |
September 14 Los Angeles Show |
|
New to the 2006 tour archive is a video of Hem performing "Not California" at their 9/14 concert at The Troubadour in Los Angeles. It's the same video previously posted here as a YouTube link, but now it's archived here in bigger, better quality. (Thank you, David!) As a reminder, you can see photos from this show here or by visiting the 2006 tour archive. |
October 11-14 Shows |
October 6 Nashville Show |
|
Click on the mini image to the left to see a big batch of photos from Hem's October 6 show at 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville. If you only check out one group of photos from Hem's Fall Tour, you'd be hard pressed to find a more lovely set or one including nice shots of every band member, including what might be the only shots of Bob playing dobro and George on electric bass. These pictures are also available through the 2006 tour and tour pictures archives. (Thanks to Bob Benson!) |
NOW Magazine Article |
This week's edition of NOW Magazine in Toronto (where Hem plays tomorrow) includes an article about Hem. It's almost entirely words from Sally about topics such as funnel cloud imagery and the trials and triumphs of touring with a 10-piece orchestra. A permanent link to this article is at the interview archive. |
Meanings Update |
I don't get to add much to the Rabbit Songs meanings page anymore, but today there's new information there for the song Horsey. The details are from Hem's concert two weeks ago on October 1 in Cincinnati, OH, a show you can (and should!) download at archive.org. |
September 30 Cleveland Show |
January 18, 2005 Columbus Show |
|
Adding to the collection posted earlier this week, more photos from Hem's show last year in Columbus, OH are at the tour pictures and 2005 tour archives. Over The Rhine and Hem Poster |
|
Click here to order one of the lovely posters from Hem's May/June 2006 tour with Over The Rhine. Click on the image to the left to see the full, uncut poster. There's a very limited quantity, so order soon! The posters are really great quality, and I bet you'd love one. |
Toronto Star Article |
Read about Hem in today's edition of the Toronto Star. The article's title is "Serendipity brought a band its perfect voice," and that's a big clue to what Dan talks about a lot. A permanent link to this article is at the interview archive. |
September 25 St. Louis Show |
The 2006 tour archive now includes a Playback St. Louis concert review of Hem's 9/25 show at Blueberry Hill. "'Great Houses of New York' and 'Curtains' were among many [songs] that showcased the exquisite piano playing by Messe; it's hard to name another keyboard player who consistently gets such a rich, melodic, fluid sound from the instrument." |
October 6 Nashville Show |
A very incomplete setlist for Hem's 10/6 show in Nashville, TN is now available here and at the 2006 tour archive. If you know more about what the band played here, contact me! |
January 18, 2005 Columbus Show |
|
It's time for a little nostalgia with pictures from Hem's show last year in Columbus, OH. Click on the preview to the left to see a big batch of cool photos. (Thanks to Tha Bomb Shelter!) You can also find these pictures at the tour pictures and 2005 tour archives. |
Meanings Update |
The Funnel Cloud meanings page has new information for the songs "Almost Home," "Funnel Cloud," and "Too Late To Turn Back Now." Most of the details come from Hem's 10/2/06 show in Ann Arbor, MI. (Yes, that means I have a copy of the show now, so if anybody in Hem is reading this, I now fully know what happened there. It is bar none the best Hem show I have never seen, and everything I've said stands. I wish the band could follow me around and randomly say such nice things about me all the time.) |
October 7 Birmingham Show |
The setlist for Hem's show at the Workplay Theater on 10/7 in Birmingham, AL is now available here and at the 2006 tour archive. (Thanks, Tommy!) |
September 30 Cleveland Show |
|
You can see a big batch of pictures from Hem's 9/30 concert in Cleveland by clicking on the preview to the left. (Thanks to Tha Bomb Shelter!) The new photos are all but the first two, which are behind-the-scenes shots from the band. Per usual, the photos are also at the concert pictures and 2006 tour archives. |
October 4 Atlanta Show |
|
Two more pictures have been added to the collection for Hem's October 4 stop in Atlanta. Click on the mini image to see them. (Thanks, David!) These photos are at the usual archives too. |
September 26 Chicago Show |
The 2006 tour archive now includes a concert review from IGN of Hem's stop at Martyrs' in Chicago on 9/26. "Fans looking to hear amazingly gorgeous Americana folk cannot do better than seeing this immensely talented band. The brilliantly lush sonic landscape found on their albums travels well, due in no small part to their willingness to pack the stage like sardines." |
Nashville City Paper Article |
Today's edition of the Nashville City Paper has an article about Hem that includes a bunch of words from Dan about the band's expansive sound and about making Funnel Cloud. Read it here or find it at interview archive. |
October 4 Atlanta Show |
|
Click on the small preview to the left to see a very pretty photo from Hem's show on October 4 in Atlanta at Smith's Olde Bar. (Thanks, Carissa!) You can also find the picture at the concert pictures archive and the 2006 tour archive along with a partial setlist for this show. If you know more about this setlist (or about any missing or incomplete setlist from any show recent or not), contact me! |
September 20 Nashville Visit |
Thanks to MVY, Martha's Vineyard Radio, Hem's set last month at the Americana Music Conference is available online. Stream it here. You can also find an interview with the band there where they play some songs (including an interesting version of "Too Late To Turn Back Now") and talk about Funnel Cloud, Sally's resemblance to a monkey, and lullabies. You can find the radio spot at the interview archive and that plus everything else about this Nashville visit at the 2006 tour archive. |
October 1 Cincinnati Show |
Hem's show a few days ago at the 20th Century Theater in Cincinnati, OH is now available for download at archive.org. The band played "In A Barrel At Sea," which is reason enough to go get the show now. The whole setlist is here. Hem generously allows distribution through archive.org, so please follow the policies of distribution to help keep show recordings free and available to everyone. |
Meanings Update |
There's a new entry on the Funnel Cloud meanings page for the song "Great Houses Of New York." You will be surprised to learn that it was inspired by great houses in New York. |
September 30 Cleveland Show |
The setlist for Hem's show at Beachland Ballroom on 9/30 in Cleveland is now available here as well as through the 2006 tour archive. |
October 2 Ann Arbor Show |
|
Click on the preview to the left to see a few pictures from Hem's stop yesterday in Michigan. The first two photos come courtesy of Bob Hoffnar and are of the band that day in a radio station studio and that night before their show in Ann Arbor. The last picture is of Hem during the concert (thanks, Ryan!). The photos are also available through the concert pictures and 2006 tour archives. The night's setlist including a few songs the band hardly ever plays (The City And The Traveler! Horsey! In A Barrel At Sea!) is at the tour archive too. |
Tour Date Changes |
Two tour dates have been removed from the tour page because it's now probable that they won't happen. Sorry, Morgantown, WV (Oct. 8) and Chattanooga, TN (Oct. 10)! |
September 26 Chicago Show |

|
In other live show recording news, you can get a CD case insert for Hem's 9/14 show at The Troubadour in LA by clicking on the picture to the left. It's also available through the 2006 tour archive. I don't know who made this cover, so if it's you, let me know so I can give you credit! |
September 30 Cleveland Show |
|
Hem's pedal steel player checked in again from the road, this time from Cleveland. Click on the preview to the left to see a couple photos of the band before their show last night. The pictures are also at the tour pictures and 2006 tour archives. (Thank you, Bob!) |
Glide Magazine Interview |
Today in Glide there's a great long article that's almost entirely words from Dan about Funnel Cloud, writing for Sally's voice, and performing live. You can find a permanent link to this interview at the articles archive. |
Meanings Update |
The Funnel Cloud meanings page includes some new info from the Glide article about the album's first song, We'll Meet Along The Way. |
Discography Update |
|
Visit the discography page to see 2 new compilation CDs each including a song by Hem: the Paste Magazine October 2006 Sampler and the Sync Summer Sampler. The Paste CD is available everywhere in stores now, free with this month's issue, but you'll have to go to Vancouver, BC to get the Sync CD. (Thanks to Steve for saving me a trip to Canada!) There are also a few more details on the discography page for Hem's latest album Funnel Cloud, including a postcard and a poster, which features the swank picture to the left. The postcard and poster are each available at Hem's shows this fall, so there are two more reasons to catch a show. |
May 30 Chicago Show |
|
<-- Click there to see a picture of Hem's setlist from May 30, 2006 at the Double Door in Chicago, complete with lion head drawing. It's also available through the tour pictures and 2006 tour archives. (Thanks, Kent!) The played setlist differed in the encore from the one planned. |
