June 2006 News Archive (Older news link at bottom of page) |
Funnel Cloud Update |
|
The cover art for Hem's upcoming album Funnel Cloud is here! To enjoy it now before you see it in stores on September 5, click on the preview to the left or visit its archived home on the discography page. For the record, I think it's a fantastic image, and I adore the stitched band logo which is new, curvy soft, slightly old-fashioned, and perfect. (Sorry about the words at the bottom. I'll post a clean copy nearer 9/5.) |
Also, I think the album's first single will be "Not California." Remember that you can hear that tune now by visiting NPR's All Songs Considered or by downloading it on iTunes on one of the great, very inexpensive compilations mentioned in the previous news update. |
Discography Update |
The discography page includes two new download-only compilation albums including Hem's song "Not California." That's right, you can now get the wonderful new song you should have streamed by now at NPR. As far as I can tell you can only download Penny Candy and Indoor Picnic Music at iTunes. That means I can't access them (iTunes hates my computer!), so I don't know other songs on the compilations or where Hem's song is in the collection, but I'm sure you can figure it out. And maybe tell me? |
June 15 Northampton Show |
If you weren't lucky enough to see Hem at the Iron Horse in Northampton, MA on June 15, you can now pretend you were by downloading the show at archive.org. It's a nice, varied setlist by Hem as a foursome. The band generously allows concerts to be stored there, so please abide by the rules of distribution and keep shows available to everyone. A permanent link to the show download is at the 2006 tour archive. |
June 14 New York Show |
|
The 2006 tour archive now includes a big collection of very nice pictures from Hem's June 14 show at the NYSEC Concert Hall in New York. The full 9-piece Hem collective was there and everybody's in at least a couple pictures. Click on the little image to the left to see them all. The photos are also available at the tour pictures archive. (Thanks, Jason!) |
June 15 Northampton Show |
|
Click on the preview to the left to see pictures from Hem's June 15 show at the Iron Horse in Northampton, MA. This show was the last of their (as yet) scheduled 2006 concerts, and it was a beauty. The photos are also available through the 2006 tour archive and the tour pictures archive. (Thanks, Keith!) |
Setlist Bonanza |
As a sidenote, Hem's tour may be over while the band takes a deserved break, but I've still got more batches of photos to sort through and share over the next couple of days. If you have any you'd like to share, or if you have a more complete setlist for any show, let me know. Thanks again to everybody who's already sent me info about Hem's tour with Over The Rhine. And of course thanks to Hem as always for allowing fans to share media like pictures from their shows, and on a more personal note, for being so kind, amusing, and accommodating to me. |
June 12 Boston Show |
The June 13 edition of the Boston Phoenix included a nice review of the show the night before at the Paradise. Read it here. It's also linked from the 2006 tour archive. The achingly pretty "Pacific Street," a pedal-steel filled "Hollow," and a bunch of songs from 2004’s Eveningland were all bright and twangy, and as comforting as a piece of velvet on your cheek. |
Meanings Update |
Speaking of the show in Boston, Dan gave a short, amusing introduction to "Lazy Eye," and now it's on the meanings page. He should've known it would end up here! (I hope he doesn't stop talking now because of that!) |
June 13 Philadelphia Show |
The 2006 tour archive now includes a very incomplete setlist for Hem's June 13 Philadelphia show at the Theatre of Living Arts. |
June 12 Boston Show |
|
Click on the preview to the left to see pictures I took at Hem's show at the Paradise in Boston on June 12. They're not fantastic, but they're the best I could do! The first one is the empty stage before the show and the last is Dan's setlist, which differs from the songs performed. You can also see the photos by visiting the 2006 tour archive or the tour pictures archive. |
June 1 Bloomington Show |
|
A few days ago I posted some pictures from Hem's June 1 show in Bloomington, IN, and now the 2 of the band have been updated with larger versions. They're joined by 4 entirely new photos, like the preview on the left that you can click on to see all the pictures. The photos are also available through the 2006 tour archive and the tour pictures archive. (Thanks, Bill!) |
June 3 Atlanta Show |
|
That's right, it's time for yet another spot of photographic evidence from Hem's June 3 Atlanta show. The new pictures are the last 4 while all the ones in the second row have been upgraded to larger versions. They're available in the same ways and places as the Bloomington pictures. (Thanks again, Bill!) |
June 3 Atlanta Show |
|
I don't know what it was about Atlanta, but there were a lot of people taking pictures there at Hem's show on June 3. You can see a new batch by clicking on the preview to the left or by visiting the 2006 tour archive or the tour pictures archive. The new photos are in the 3rd row. (Thanks, Jeff!) |
NPR All Songs Considered |
NPR continues their support of Hem by including the song "Not California" in their Summer Music Preview '06. You can listen to the awesome song by visiting this page. (Previous NPR spots are here and here.) "Not California" is from the upcoming album Funnel Cloud which hits stores September 5. I have it on good authority that the rest of the album is as amazing as that song, if not more so. Start preparing yourself now! |
June 1 Bloomington Show |
|
Check out some pictures from Hem's June 1 show in Bloomington, IN by clicking on the little image to the left. They're also available through the 2006 tour archive and the tour pictures archive. Very pretty! (Thanks, Bill!) |
June 3 Atlanta Show |
|
The collection of photos from Hem's June 3 Atlanta show continues to multiply. You can see the new pictures (all in the second row) by clicking on the preview to the left or by visiting the 2006 tour archive or the tour pictures archive. (Thanks again, Bill!) |
May 7 Seattle Show |
The 2006 tour archive now includes the full setlist for Hem's May 7 show at Neumos in Seattle. There's also a picture of the actual setlist here, and it's amusing (to possibly only me) because it abbreviates the word "Waltz" with "3/4" (as in time) and because "Hollow" is just so good they had to list it twice. I went with its first mention for the setlist at the archive though maybe I chose the wrong one. (Thanks, Kirk!) |
June 5 Charlotte Show |
|
Feast your eyes on a new bunch of pictures from Hem's June 5 show in Charlotte, NC at the Visulite Theatre. You can see them by clicking on the preview to the left or by visiting the 2006 tour archive or the tour pictures archive. The new photos start with the 3rd picture in the 4th row. (Thanks, Ellen H.!) |
June 7 Chapel Hill Show |
|
Entirely new to the 2006 tour archive is a collection of photos from Hem's June 7 show at Local 506 in Chapel Hill, NC. As always, they're available through the mini preview and the archives. (Thanks again, Ellen!) You can also see the show's complete setlist here. |
April 29 Boston Show |
|
Completing today's triumverate of pictures is a new batch from Hem's April 29 show in Boston. You know the drill on how to find them. The new photos are the last 4 and are all from Josh Ritter's headlining set where 4 members of Hem joined him on stage to perform a cover of "Jersey Girl." Finally, pictures where you can actually see the guys on stage! (Thanks, Doug!) |
TV Commercial |
The Liberty Mutual TV commercial mentioned and linked to in the previous news update has some set airtimes on TV. Catch it in US primetime every Monday night for at least the next 6 weeks. |
June 3 Atlanta Show |
|
Also adding to yesterday's update, there's another new picture from Hem's June 3 show at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. You can see it by clicking on the preview to the left or by visiting the 2006 tour archive or the tour pictures archive. It's the last picture in the row. (Thanks, JRjr!) |
June 6 Asheville Show |
The 2006 tour archive now includes a partial setlist for Hem's June 6 show at The Grey Eagle in Asheville, NC. Nice to see that the cover song "Don't Fence Me In" has made at least a couple live appearances in the past week. It also showed up (maybe in abbreviated form) at least once each in 2005 and 2003. |
May 30 Chicago Show |
|
You can see one lonely picture from Hem's May 30 show at the Double Door in Chicago by clicking on the preview to the left. At least we can see that they really played there! A permanent link to this photo is at the tour pictures and 2006 tour archives. |
TV Commercial |
If you thought you heard Hem on TV, you probably did. Their song "Half Acre" prominently plays during a Liberty Mutual commercial for insurance. You can watch it online at the company's website here. It's like watching a music video for the song but with images you probably never imagined for it. |
June 3 Atlanta Pictures |
|
New today are photos from Hem's June 3 show at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. You can see them by clicking on the preview to the left or by visiting the 2006 tour archive or the tour pictures archive. (Thanks, Dan L.!) |
June 5 Charlotte Pictures |
|
An even larger collection of concert photos are new from Hem's June 5 show at the Visulite Theatre in Charlotte. You can see them by clicking on the image to the left or by visiting the 2006 tour or tour pictures archives. (Thanks again to Dan L.!) |
Setlists Aplenty |
A Songwriting Assist |
Did you know that Mandy Moore is putting together a new album? How about that Hem recently lent her a songwriting hand? The girl has good taste. Read about it in Mandy's blog. |
Paste Magazine Article |
I mentioned back in March that the March/April 2006 edition of Paste Magazine (who's currently sponsoring Hem's tour with Over The Rhine) included an article about Hem with some words from Dan about No Word From Tom. The article is now online, and you can read it here. A permanent link to the article is at the interview archive. |
West Coast Tour Updates |
|
In Los Angeles a couple weeks ago Hem played a daytime showcase sponsored by Nettwerk (Hem's management company). Enjoy a collection of wonderful photos (off site) from this May 15, 2006 show at the Hotel Cafe by clicking on the image to the left. Permanent links to these photos are at the tour pictures and 2006 tour archives. |
Also new at the 2006 tour archive is the setlist from Hem's May 30 show in Chicago and a partial setlist for their May 7 show in Seattle. |
