January 2005 Archive (Older news link at bottom of page)
My Internet access will be spotty through February, and I will probably not be able to update this site until the end of February or the beginning of March. The tour page is accurate as of January 26, but additional tour information will not doubt be available before I am able to update the site. Check with venues and Hem's tour page for the most up-to-date tour information.
While I will probably be unable to update the site, I will be able to check my email, and I would be incredibly grateful to receive any and all Hem news by email, which should help make my eventual update much easier. Also, if you have any information about shows like setlists, pictures, or newspaper/magazine articles, please continue to email links/details to me at christina@allabouthem.com.
I'm sorry for any inconvenience my lack of updates may cause. When I am able to update the site again, the update will no doubt be ENORMOUS.
January 25, 2022 -- Eugene, OR instore performance
I just added a January 30 afternoon instore performance date in Eugene, OR to the tour page and didn't want anybody in the area to miss it, so it's getting the front page treatment.
January 24, 2022 -- Denver Post Interview
The January 21, 2022 issue of the Denver Post has an article about countrypolitan music that includes some comments from various musicians, including Dan Messe. The only picture accompanying the article is of Hem, and that's nice news too.
January 21, 2022 -- Articles & Discography
An article in the November 11-18, 2004 edition of Birmingham Weekly about Hem including an interesting interview with Dan Messe is now available to read online here thanks to Laser's Edge, a Birmingham CD store mentioned in the article. (Thanks, Fred!)
The Minneapolis Star Tribune chose Hem's January 22 show at the Quest Club as one of the week's top concert picks. You can read the article including a bit about the band and show here (free registration may be required).
In site news, I updated the discography page to include an Eveningland promotional CD, which I find most interesting for its disc art.
January 18, 2022 -- Cincinnati CityBeat Interview
The January 12, 2022 issue of Cincinnati, OH's CityBeat paper has a very nice article about Hem including a band picture and an interview with Dan Messe, who among other things talks about the band's record label issues and about writing songs for Sally's voice. You can read the article online here. (If that link doesn't work, search the archives or try this printer-friendly link.)
January 16, 2022 -- WFPK Live Lunch
Hem's entire 60 minute January 14, 2022 Live Lunch performance at Louisville, KY's WFPK is now available online. Dial-up users visit this page and broadband users visit this page. The setlist is here and is archived on the tour page. Enjoy!
January 14, 2022 -- BBC Radio 2
At the end of last November I mentioned that Hem would play a BBC Radio 2 session on the Bob Harris Country Show, and there's now an air date. Hem will be on the show Thursday, February 24, 2022 between 7:00pm and 8:00pm (GMT). If you aren't in the listening area you can stream the show live by visiting the previous link. The show should also be at least briefly archived at the BBC Radio 2 site, and I will post archive information when it becomes available. (Thanks to Conal for the heads up!)
January 11, 2022 -- Miscellaneous articles, lyrics, and a happy birthday
Late addition: Hem will perform on Louisville, KY's WFPK Live Lunch on Friday, January 14 at 12:00pm (EST). If you're in the area, you can attend the show for free. Doors open at 11:30am, and admission is on a first come, first seated basis. If you're not in the area, you can stream the show live. For more information about attending and listening to the show, visit the Live Lunch page. Also, the show should be archived at that site, and I'll post archive information as soon as it's available.
Late addition #2: There are two new March 2005 tour dates in the UK.
Hem's Eveningland popped up on another critic's list of best albums of 2004. A Dec. 30, 2004 article in the Long Island Press says this about the album: "Traditional Americana folk instruments layered behind Sally Ellyson's warm, dusty vocals are addictive and easy to cherish. In particular, a lullaby-like cover of "Jackson" that could have impressed Cash himself."
The Denver Post listed Hem's January 25 tour stop in Denver as one of the top ten shows to catch in Denver this winter and spring. The Jan. 9, 2005 article says "Sally Ellyson's knowingly sweet voice straddles the line between alt-country, traditional lullabies and contemporary folk music, and it is so instantly captivating that it is impossible not to listen. She fronts this young New York band, which is touring in support of the excellent new offering "Eveningland," and this will be a night of beautiful music."
In site news, I've added lyrics pages for all songs on all of Hem's albums because that seems to be something people are often looking for but have trouble finding online. You can find the lyrics here. Permanent links to all the lyrics can be found on the discography page and at the top of the meanings page.
In other site news, today is this site's first birthday. Happy birthday to me! Thank you to everyone who's helped make this year so enjoyable, particularly to everyone who's contributed information for this site and of course to Hem for their support and for continuing to make beautiful music.
January 2, 2022 -- New York Times
Today's Arts & Leisure section of the New York Times discusses and briefly interviews Hem in an article about the revival of countrypolitan music. You can read the article online by clicking on the picture to the left (a bigger version is with the article) or by clicking here. (Free registration may be required to read the article.) Make sure to look for yet another shout-out to Glen Campbell and his song "Wichita Lineman" - I should've started a running tally about that like I mentioned last month!
